      <image:title>Side Projects - Synchronizing REAPER Installs Across Computers - The Manual Way</image:title>
      <image:caption>REAPER already includes a way to synchronize your configuration settings on multiple computers: manually importing and exporting a massive zip file with all of your settings via the preferences panel. While this approach is great for backups, and could be used to keep your content synced, it would be… an undeniable pain in the ass to maintain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Synchronizing REAPER Installs Across Computers - The Portable Way</image:title>
      <image:caption>When installing REAPER on Windows, there’s a sneaky checkbox that bundles everything as a “portable install”. This allows you to keep your REAPER Application and Resources in the same location. By using a portable install you can run your entire REAPER configuration off an external flash drive, SSD, or cloud sync software like DropBox that monitors contents within one specific parent directory.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Synchronizing REAPER Installs Across Computers - The Programmer’s Way</image:title>
      <image:caption>For years, I have been using GitHub to synchronize a private repository with my configuration files across PCs. It works, but I have never recommended it to any rational human, as it requires meticulous setup every time I start from scratch on a new PC, a small pile of scripts and batch files, and the occasional self-imposed disaster of rebasing and squashing and nuking it all just to start from scratch.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller - Early prototyping...</image:title>
      <image:caption>A cluttered mass of wires, buttons, and an Arduino Uno. Curiously enough, this was plenty to play with and help inform what would and would not be possible in the final controller build.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>The first semblance of a case! This case came from an entirely different side-project, so I didn't need to assemble it or do any tweaking for use as a testing ground. Just scrap wood from around the garage.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>At this point, I knew what I wanted to get from this controller. I designed a 3D version of my ideal controller in Sketchup and Fusion 360 before converting that to a 2D model and sending it off to a local water jet company per the recommendation of a friend.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Here's the controller fresh off the water jet! Done on two sheets of 1/16" thick aluminum. You can see by the two screw holes on the edge that the alignment was absolutely perfect, something I could never get as clean by hand.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The edges were pretty sharp at first so I sanded them down and rounded them off with this oscillating multi-tool I use all the time.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736398936-2KCJQ1SPZACBEWLO0Y2D/10+-+jpCXG3t.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>Spray paint! I initially looked into getting the controller powder coated but that was going to cost me anywhere from $75 to $150 and quite frankly, I didn't want to put that kind of money into it when I could get something decent with $15 worth of spray paint. Would it look more professional? Yeah sure probably.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736381592-M0GLDE5B8QCG1X79KMQI/11+-+gHbIgal.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>But spray paint was good enough for me. Bronzy copper sort of finish on the sides and then a gunmetal grey on the center.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736403914-54IE8XVFGBJ9KY88APA2/12+-+M86LDzF.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>

      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>Then came the final stretch: wiring. Here's a wiring schematic I made for the controller using Fritzing. I ended up doing the wiring pretty much exactly as it's shown here, which is rare because I usually just diverge from the plan when it comes to that end of the build and inevitably need to make adjustments to accommodate for space inside the controller etc.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736404670-EFFBU3XOZY3GQQDNTMZQ/14+-+qez5sAZ.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>Mounted the new 4x20 LCD display using nylon PCB standoffs and some 3M mounting brackets. Started up wiring.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736413606-D9JC9GWMMZFDP6XVVUI4/15+-+5AuMUnX.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>Not the best soldering but they survived the "tug aggressively on the wires and see if they pop off" test.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736416044-AA2ZXZGSP78O1GOK8F4H/16+-+KNgS7Rh.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here's what that clean looking wiring diagram from earlier looks like in real life. Not as pretty but good enough for me.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736420929-3G1BSCJFZ2B1QNK5T4ZP/17+-+EDOvW3C.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>And here's the final thing! Everything on the physical side of things works as intended, so all of the big updates to it will come exclusively from the software and programming end of things.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1589736423197-WTMOQ4BFKZONQB8AWV3Z/18+-+KjoRAIy.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Side Projects - Custom Reaper MIDI Controller</image:title>
      <image:caption>And in my usual fashion, I made a USB cable for the back of it, parts supplied by my long-time buddies over at Zap Cables. If you're reading this, thanks for making it this far!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>An RTS-focused studio based out of Vancouver, BC, Relic has spent the last 25 years building some of the world’s most beloved strategy franchises, most notably: Age of Empires IV, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes. As a member of Relic’s “Central Development” team, my role largely revolved around designing bespoke workflow tools to intercommunicate between an in-house game engine (Essence Engine), Wwise, Reaper, and speech/dialogue systems.</image:caption>

      <image:title>RX-7 Sim - Engine Bay Mic Placement</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Countryman B3 in the lower left of this picture sits about 3in from the air intake filters, and captures that pure suction tone. The other two mics are fairly similar, with some blend of the neighboring turbos, road noise, and the rotary engine block rumbling away. You would think that the upper right sure looks like a lot of empty space to place a microphone. And you would be correct, but in a test run prior to the session, I found that all that empty space just leaves more room for things in the engine bay to rattle around and make a somewhat unlistenable racket.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b84872b697a9811e7f06b35/1761525124235-1X9RF9FJ1BN6BNX656HM/RX7_Oct2025_Rear_Mics.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>RX-7 Sim - Exhaust Mic Placement</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Countryman B6 here picks up the most raw exhaust note. The license plate mounted SM57 adds just enough of an air gap to give some more breathing room for the sound. The tow hook mounted SM57 is aimed towards the rear tire, and captures a somewhat distant perspective on the exhaust; plus a gritty layer of road texture and gravel (gracefully chipping away at the paint on my rear quarter panel). For the car nerds: it made ~280 to the wheels (on a Mustang dyno) that day. Still prior to sorting out an issue with the primary turbo’s wastegate actuator, and a sprinkling of oil pressure gremlins, but we’ll take it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>RX-7 Sim - Interior Mic Placement</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately, I don’t have a great photo of the LOM Usis mounted on the RX-7s rear strut tower brace, but the camera’s perspective is roughly where the left of the two mics was placed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>RX-7 Sim - Timecode Sync</image:title>
      <image:caption>With so many recorders, mics, and cameras in the mix, this seemed like a great opportunity to experiment a bit with timecode sync. At the end of the day, the old-school “clap sync” can take you pretty far, but the Tentacle line of sync devices proved useful regardless.</image:caption>

      <image:title>RX-7 Sim - Mic Prep</image:title>
